Statistics

An estimated 400 million Chinese nationals, about a third of the country are now studying English as a second language, fuelled by rapid growth in global trade and a recent boom in tourism.

As well as a desire in learning the English foreign language within China, there is also a record number of Chinese students studying abroad mostly funded by elite and upper class families. According to Government statistics released recently put the number of Chinese students studying abroad at 5.9 million as of the end of 2023, more than any other nationality. The OECD projects there will be over 8 million International Chinese students by 2026.

Students from China study in over 100 countries with popular destinations such as the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, UK, South Korea, Canada, Singapore, Malaysia, France, Germany, Thailand, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland and Russia to name a few. Given the shortage of university places, more Chinese students are going abroad for International education and enrolment. Currently English language courses and preparation classes take place at state high schools where students aim for studying abroad or via private professional training agencies which prepare AP and SAT preparation classes.
